5 FOODS THAT MAY CONTAIN NICOTINE



Nicotine being one of the toxic and harmful substances ever discovered. They can be addictive to and harmful to the body. However, there are vegetables and beverages that we usually eat or drink everyday that contain some amounts of nicotine and  they are mostly from the family of nightshade pants (solanaceae).

 Eggplant
The second highest plants next to tobacco in nightshade family that contain almost 100ng/g of nicotine alkaloid is eggplants, but it is negligible because in every 10kg of eggplants found a concentration of nicotine same as holding a stick of cigarette.

Teas
Research has shown that both green and black teas contain some amounts of nicotine whether regular or decaffeinated, instant teas show higher nicotine content with a concentration up to 250ng/g.

Tomato
Findings shows that an average of 6 – 7ng/g wet weight of nicotine substance are found in tomatoes, Tomato possesses a nicotine alkaloid called tomatine, but nicotine concentrations decreases as it ripens.

Potato
Ripe potato has about 4.2ng/g of the substance, green and sprouting potatoes have up to 40.3ng/g, pureed potatoes found to contain about 52ng/g of the substance, the nicotine alkaloid in potato is called solanine which is more concentrated on its skin and can be fatal to health.

 Peppers and Capsicums
Peppers and capsicums contain solanine and solanadine which also are nicotine alkaloids, 7.7 – 9.2 mg of solanine have been reported to be found in 100 grams serving of common peppers.

Regardless that nicotine is harmful to the body and can be found in this foods cannot stop us from eating this foods, but we should know that some factors play an important roles such as inhaling it, smoking or ingesting it, However, reducing the dietary intake and proper cooking of this foods will certainly get rid of this substance in them.
